 How to Rate and Appeal

Self Rating

Flex01

If you are new to the league or haven’t played in three years (or players over 60 years of age who haven’t played in two years) you can and should self rate. Mixed and tournament exclusive players will be asked to self-rate when joining national leagues.

How to self rate.

Appeal your Self Rating

A player who self rates and believes that the minimum rating assigned to him or her is too high is immediately offered the opportunity to appeal this rating. These appeals are reviewed by NorCal‘s Self Rate Appeal Committee. There is no fee to appeal a self rating.

Appeal your Year End Computer Rating

The automatic appeal process is available to all players except Benchmark (B) players who played at District, Section or National Championships for an Adult or Senior team. There is no fee to appeal a rating.  Appeals are granted only for players whose rating falls within the allowed margin AND who have limited match playing history.  Go to the National TennisLink site and log in to your USTA account. After doing so, you will see an Appeal Rating link next to your Rating Number on the right hand corner.

Appeal for Medical Conditions

A medical appeal is a formal, written request from a player for reconsideration of his/her NTRP Rating based on a permanent, disabling illness or injury that has occurred since the player generated the year-end NTRP Rating. There is a $25 fee to file and it is reviewed by the NorCal Medical Appeals Committee.  More.

Find your NTRP Level

The rating categories are generalizations about skill levels. You may find that you actually play above or below the category which best describes your skill level, depending on your competitive ability. The category you choose is not meant to be permanent, but may be adjusted as your skills change or as your match play demonstrates the need for reclassification.Ultimately your rating is based upon match results. In an effort to avoid disqualification when players are rating themselves and they question which level they should play, they should place themselves in the higher level of play. Types of Ratings

What does that letter next to my rating mean?
C = Year End Computer Rating based on NTRP tournament results, Adult, Senior and/or Super Senior league match results.
B = Benchmark; played in District, Section or National Championship event
S = Self-rating or rating lowered by Medical Appeal
A = Adjusted by Appeal Process or through Grievance Disqualification and/or Disqualification Process.
M = Year End computer rating based only on Mixed League data
T = Year end computer rating based only on Tournament data.

What is Dynamic NTRP

A dynamic rating is the result of your current match averaged with up to three of your most recent dynamic results generated. A dynamic rating is calculated after each match and expressed to the one-hundredth of a point. Dynamic ratings are not disclosed to players, unlike year-end ratings which are published annually. More Information.

Three Strikes

What is a strike and how do i get one? Each time a player’s dynamic rating exceeds the maximum tolerance for the level, he or she automatically earns a "strike." More Here.
