New Players Celebrate New Weekday Tennis League

Ladera Oaks Team
The 2012 Peninsula Ladies’ Entry Level Daytime pilot league wrapped up with a bang. Representing the four teams from Almaden Country Club, Courtside, Ladera Oaks, and Los Altos Country Club 16 ladies celebrated the inaugural success of a brand new league.

The women enjoyed a delicious lunch, prizes, and a spirited round robin at Courtside Club. "We loved this league; it gave us a running head start going into the regular Adult 2.5 season. It also helped me learn how to be a captain," said Mary Pless from Ladera Oaks.

Acting on the recommendation of the NorCal Board of Directors and leaders from many local member organizations, NorCal created this pilot league to provide a service to inexperienced, entry level daytime players. As a pilot program in the Lower Peninsula, the Ladies’ Daytime League gave players new to league tennis the chance to gain match experience, play as part of a team, and expand their tennis network of friends. Dale Russell, Chair of NorCal Adult Leagues Committee, thanked Gordon Collins for hosting the celebration lunch and welcomed the players to the exciting world of NorCal tennis. He assured them that the committee and staff would seek to continue providing the best league experiences in the future.

The format for the league was two lines of doubles and one line of singles played on weekday mornings. League matches did not affect players’ ratings, so the emphasis stayed on skills improvement, match practice, team building, and FUN.

Based on the overwhelmingly positive response of participants, NorCal plans to expand this pilot program to the rest of NorCal in the fall. Stay tuned for news about team registration this summer, and contact DeDee Winfield at winfield@norcal.usta.com or Kirsten Riker at riker@norcal.usta.com for more information.
