Collegiate Players Dominate USONP NorCal
The US Open National Playoffs (USONP) presented by playtennis.com returned for a third year to Chamisal Tennis and Fitness Club in Salinas, Calif. One of a series of 13 sectional qualifying tournaments, the USONP gives players age 14 and older an opportunity to play their way into the US Open.
Nicolas Meister of Trabuco Canyon, CA won the men’s singles without losing a set. Meister defeated Brandon Sutter of El Dorado Hills, CA in the finals, 6-2, 6-1. Eugene Muchynski from San Jose came the closest to taking a set in the semifinal match, 7-5, 6-2.
The women’s champion, Giuliana Olmos of Fremont, CA experienced an equally smooth route to the championship title. Olmos defeated Stephanie Lin of Pinole, CA, in the finals, 6-0, 6-3.
Meister, a 23 year old Political Science graduate from UCLA, he earned All-America honors by being one of the top 16 seeds in the 2012 NCAA Singles Draw. He was a doubles All-American in 2010. He graduated in June and intends to turn pro.
Olmos, age 19, was introduced to tennis by her dad at age 6. She just completed her freshman year at USC as a member of the Trojan tennis team. She plans on training 6 days/week this summer to prepare for the next step in qualifying for the US Open.
Nick Meister teamed with Stanford star, Hilary Barte to win the Mixed Doubles championship. Barte led the Cardinal to a 2010 NCAA team championship; she is a 2-time NCAA doubles champion and an 8-time All-American (singles and doubles all 4 years). She finished her collegiate career in 2011 with a degree in International Relations.
