NAPA - The 2012 Super Senior 65s Section Championships took place June 25-27 at the Silverado Resort and Spa. Twenty eight teams arrived on Monday, excited to have qualified for the sectionals championships but there was more tennis to be played to claim the championship trophy.
The tennis was extremely competitive; the rallies were long and several matches were decided by a match tie-break. It was evident that the seniors have taken a thing or two from the younger generation of players with the heavy grunting, but the seniors did hold on to their old school slices, top spin, deft volleys and lob shots.
Carol Shields, captain of the Rinconda Hills team that won the Women’s 4.0 division had this to say about the facility and the event, "Thank you so much for a wonderful tournament, as always the officials were fabulous, the facility this time is outstanding with great weather and ambience, it was a pure joy to come here"
Silverado Resort and Spa was a first time league championship host and had a lasting effect on the players, officials and staff. Players were happy with the pleasant weather throughout the event. They had kind words for the staff and volunteers who ran the smooth and successful championship.
Jacob Hansen and James Rutherford from Silverado Resort were very welcoming and provided great assistance throughout. The officials Nancy Baty, Rich Taylor and Sue Smith were on hand to assist players on court and answer rule inquiries. Special thanks to local event volunteers Dick Giusto, Mark Glickstein and Carmen MacKey who managed the tournament desk.
