1. What’s the first step to becoming a tennis player?
New players should find a program that will help them in the early stages of learning to play. Teaching pros make learning to play, but just getting a friend and going to your local park and recreation department just to hit the ball around will work as well.
Tennis is more fun when you're part of a program. That’s why we offer our “Find a Program” feature, allowing you to search throughout Northern California. Let us help you get connected and learn to play tennis fast in your neighborhood!
2. How much time will it take to learn?
For most people it takes no time at all. Getting into the right program, practice schedule and league, you'll rapidly get the hang of it!
3. What equipment do I need?
Tennis is the most basic sport. All you need to play is a racquet and a can of balls. And it doesn’t have to cost much. Racquets can be purchased for under $40, and balls shouldn’t run more than $3 a can.
4. Can I get a good workout?
Want flat abs? Chiseled legs and a toned body? Tennis will help you get them. The abdominal muscles and legs are involved in every stroke in the game. Want to burn calories? For the average person, an hour of tennis will burn 500 of them. An hour of stationary bike will only burn 387. Which one sounds like more fun?
5. Do I have to wear all white?
Only if you want. The days of lily-white tennis fashion are gone!
6. Can tennis help my social life?
There’s no more social sport than the game of tennis. It is one of the few mothers, fathers, daughters and sons-there is a place for everyone on a tennis court.
7. Is there a charge to be in a tennis program?
Yes, but you will find the cost is much more reasonable than you might think. Prices vary per programs, lessons and participation frequency. However, for a very minimal cost, you will be part of a program where you will learn to play tennis and also meet new people.
8. Can my spouse/friend and I learn together?
Absolutely. Tennis is one of the few sports where men and women can play together. And we recommend starting tennis with a friend so you can practice and work on your game together.
9. What about my kids? Can they get into these programs?
Yes, most tennis organizations will offer programs for kids. Clinics, camps, lessons, leagues, tournaments are all some of the tools available to get your child out on the court. Go to our “Find a Program” to contact a facility near you to get your child enrolled.
To have your child participate in beginning league tennis formats. Contact our Junior Department at

10. Do I need to know the Rules of Tennis before I can start playing?
It is important to know that tennis is based on sportsmanship and etiquette. However, rules are good to know if you are going to be competing in tournaments, leagues, or team play. It is not necessary for you to know every rule in the book while you’re getting started.
