Manager of Player Development


Job Summary:
 

  • Support the continuing development of Northern California junior tennis players and coaches.
  • Work and collaborate with junior tennis coaches, players and parents to develop a long term comprehensive strategic plan to guide players through a player development pathway; ranging from QuickStart Competition to Collegiate to US Open Champion.
  • Combine and streamline adult and junior tournament administration under one manager/group.


Necessary Qualifications:

  • Experience and working knowledge in the area(s) of player development; coaching education and sport science, talent identification and development, junior and collegiate competition and regional/national training and coaching as well as media, marketing, and advocacy.
  • Experience with the sanctioning and scheduling process.  Tournament Director or other administrative experience running or working on sanctioned tournaments. 
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively while keeping stakeholders informed of progress.  Strong leadership skills, can-do attitude, the ability to plan projects and manage staff with minimum direction, superior verbal communication skills, excellent organizational and planning skills and strong sense of personal integrity are important qualifications. BA/BS degree earned from an accredited college or university or equivalent work experience.  Experience working in a sports and/or not-for-profit environment is desirable.  Tennis background. 


Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

Player Development

  • Determine what ‘player development pathway’ means to USTA NorCal. How will it work?
  • Develop and implement a strategy to collaborate with the tennis community and guide as many players as possible (novice to nationally ranked) through the player development pathway.
  • Begin a collaborative and sustained approach with the community (players, parents, coaches, organizations, academies) to team together to produce many more NorCal top players.
  • Educate junior players, parents, coaches on the wide variety of programs and/or resources available through USTA (Quickstart, tournaments, scholarships, travel teams, relationships with academies, etc).
  • Bring greater visibility to middle and top ranked players.

Tournaments

  • Work with Director of Competitive Play to set annual Tournament goals.
  • Work to streamline our junior and adult tournament administration
  • Work with Outreach on communication and marketing strategies.
  • Work closely with tournament committees
  • Oversee tournament quality control
  • Work closely with Player Development staff to ensure tournament timelines and milestones are being met.

Strategic Management

  • Consistently gauge the effectiveness of Player Development efforts as compared to mission, goals and desired outcomes.
  • Work to enhance process and procedure, all while navigating the perimeters of a volunteer driven organization.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively combining vision with administrative competence.
  • Financial Administration
  • Approve all expenditures against Player Development (including tournaments).  Budget and provide timely projections, variances, rationale and other reports and updates as requested.
  • Work closely with Controller.

Project Management

  • Strong project management skills including work planning, delegation and budgeting.
  • Manage a portfolio of Player Development projects.

Communication and Other Important Skills

  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills.
  • Solid relationship-building skills.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills; self starter.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects, priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to excellence.
  • PC skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Ability to travel for the job, both inside and outside of the Section, as required.

 

Junior Team Tennis League (JTTL) Coordinator

Job Summary: 

Work on the USTA NorCal Spring and Fall JTTL (non advancing volunteer-run fun leagues) and the USTA Summer JTTL (competitive advancing league).  Act as JTTL administrative, software, and website content point person.  Use strong customer service skills.  Work closely with several internal and external staffers, volunteers and partners to help develop and grow JTTL.  Manage event planning and coordination for JTTL tournaments and events.

Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

JTTL office administration

  • Manage administrative aspects of USTA NorCal Junior Team Tennis Leagues.
  • Organize and distribute appropriate information to potential Area League Coordinators, team coaches, tennis professionals, parents, high school coaches.
  • Proficient with team tennis software and ability to provide customer support for software. Knowledge of USTA Tennis Link, Leagues for Fun. 
  • Ability to provide tech support to users remotely.
  • Provide updated, timely, and fresh content to JTTL pages of Norcal website.
  • Math skills; reconciling spreadsheets; process memberships; generate information and reports.
  • Ability to travel to various JTTL or Junior Tennis events around Northern California as necessary.  Current California driver’s license and clean driving record necessary. 
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, show confidence, and be a quick learner.

Team up with Community Tennis Coordinators (field staff)

  • Assist CTC’s with administrative support to facilitate their league(s).
  • Assist CTC’s with JTTL open house meetings, info night, try outs, etc.
  • Ability to speak in public to parents, volunteers, etc. about JTTL.

 
Event Planning and Coordination

  • Coordinate season ending events or event celebrations for team tennis (dates, location, prizes, t-shirts, catering, invitations, on-site coordination, volunteer recruitment, etc)
  • Events include; Spring BBQ, Showdown, Herb Cub and more
  • Coordinate with internal or external resources to facilitate design work (flyers, t-shirts).
  • Determine quantity of all event supplies; order and track supplies.
  • Ability to load and unload event equipment (such as tennis supplies, boxes of prizes, refreshments, etc.  Must be able to lift, bend, etc).
  • Ability to be highly organized during preparations for event, and during the day(s) of event.

 
Ongoing Training

  • Attend all USTA Junior Team Tennis Youth meetings, events and trainings
  • Attend staff trainings and meetings as directed by manager.

Other

  • Assist Manager of Player Developement with additional tasks as assigned.


Necessary Qualifications:

An understanding of what JTTL is! 
PLUS:  Candidate must have very strong administrative and data management skills.  Experience using MS Outlook, Excel and Word.  Experience and self confidence to communicate verbally and in writing with established club pro’s, high school coaches, park and recreation management, parents and other VIP’s and represent USTA professionally.  A sales and customer service mentality; listening and providing information about JTTL.  Implement creative problem solving and conflict resolution skills.  Candidate must have the ability to successfully prioritize and multi-task and meet many deadlines.  Must have high energy and enthusiasm with a desire to initiate and promote junior programs.  Candidate must have the ability to work at our events and exhibit a wide range of organization and leadership skills.  BA/BS degree earned from an accredited college or university or equivalent work experience.  Candidate must have an appreciation and passion for youth sports.  Experience working in a sports and/or not-for-profit environment is preferable. A tennis background and knowledge of USTA junior programs is necessary.
 

Manager of Administration

Job Summary: 
Oversee the Administrative function of USTA NorCal including Finance, Information Technology, Office Services, and Data Analysis.  Work in conjunction with the Executive Director to help develop administrative goals and objectives.  Work closely with administrative team and beyond to attain goals and objectives.  The administrative requirements of this job dovetail the many tennis and outreach programs offered by USTA Northern California.  Therefore, knowledge of USTA programs and terminology is necessary. 


Necessary Qualifications:

  • Experience leading an administrative team consisting of Finance, Information Technology, Office Services and Data Analysis.  8-10+ years of proven leadership experience directing and guiding Finance, I.T. and Office Services department(s) to meet and exceed its goals and objectives.   Ability to work both independently and collaboratively while keeping stakeholders informed of progress.  Strong leadership skills, the ability to plan projects and manage staff with minimum direction, superior verbal communication skills, excellent organizational and planning skills and strong sense of personal integrity are important qualifications. BA/BS degree earned from an accredited college or university or equivalent work experience.  Experience working in a sports and/or not-for-profit environment is desirable.  Tennis background.  We are seeking a dynamic individual who brings superior work quality and passion to the job.


Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:
Finance

  • Work closely with Executive Director on organizational annual budget; meetings with Department Managers, Budget Committee, etc.
  • Work closely with Controller.
  • Approve expenditures against budget and provide timely projections, variances, rationale and other reports and updates as requested.
  • Understand the grants program and related financials.
  • An understanding of our current fundraising/sponsorship goals and deliverables.
  • Begin a more thorough Data Analysis program.


Office Services:

  • Work closely with Executive Director on all high level building related issues.
  • Assist with the upcoming relocation of the USTA NorCal office.
  • Work closely with Office Services team regarding vendor contracts, vendors, etc.
  • Work with team to oversee office technical equipment and resources.
  • Work with Office Services to ensure USTA NorCal is in compliance with OSHA, ADA regulations, ergonomic issues, etc. Help oversee office appearance.
  • Work with Office Services to compile data and reports for monthly Board packet.


Information Technology:

  • Work closely with E.D. to determine our Information Technology needs and wants.
  • Work closely with our I.T. contractors to ensure that deliverables are being met.
  • Work closely with I.T. to ensure we are innovating as best we can.
  • Work closely with I.T. to ensure employee needs are being met.


Human Capital Management:

  • Direct, manage and motivate 4 staff specialists responsible for goals and tasks in the core Administrative areas. 
  • Direct and inspire others to drive tasks through to completion while consistently monitoring progress.
  • May be required to serve as staff liaison to committees including but not limited to Finance, Operations, etc.


Strategic Management:

  • Work in conjunction with the Executive Director to help develop Administrative goals.
  • Help develop and implement an annual Administrative Operating Plan consistent with USTA NorCal’s overall strategic plan.  Provide timely reports and updates as required.
  • Help develop and implement strategies that link USTA Northern California administrative activities with USTA national priorities and programs.

Position Title: Roving Umpire

Major Duties

  • Roving umpires must have knowledge of the rules because they may be called upon to problem solve at a moment’s notice.
  • Overrule clear mistakes when standing on the court WITHOUT a verbal appeal by the player
  • Solve on court problems with specific procedures and may give code violations
  • To become certified as a Sectional Umpire (the next step past being a rookie), an official must attend a Roving Clinic and work an additional 4 days as a volunteer rover under the supervision of experienced officials.

Qualifications:

  • Must attend a certification class annually
  • Umpires must attend a Sectional Umpire School and pass the test
  • A “Rookie” umpire must attend a Provisional Umpire School and pass the Provisional Umpire Test
  • Must be knowledgeable about the requirements for each age group or level of play
  • An eye exam is required every two years.
  • Must be customer service oriented.
  • You must have own transportation to tournaments
