2009 College Battle of the Bay

September 9, 2009 11:28 PM

The Battle of the Bay Tennis Classic, October 29 through November 1, has been formed by the University of San Francisco men’s tennis head coach Peter Bartlett, assistant coach Pablo Pires de Almeida, and the California Tennis Club Director of Tennis, Steve Jackson.

All three of these established tennis professionals look forward to the Battle of the Bay becoming an annual event. The invitational tournament was inspired by competition at the highest level of NCAA Division I tennis singles and doubles play in the Bay Area. Never before has a tennis tournament featured the top three singles players and top three doubles teams of Stanford, California, San Francisco, Saint Mary’s and Santa Clara. The event will feature 16 of the best college players from around the Bay facing off in a tournament format to see who will hold the title as the best singles and doubles players in the Bay Area for the year.

The Battle of the Bay Tennis Classic will not only have the best Bay Area college tennis student-athletes but it will also have the best former ATP pros playing a singles and doubles exhibition on Thursday night. This invitational tournament will be the fi rst of its kind and will feature high-level tennis with local and national repercussions at stake. The Battle of the Bay Tennis Classic is an Intercollegiate Tennis Association sanctioned event that will count for NCAA Division I singles and doubles rankings. This makes each match an opportunity for all players to improve their individual rankings. This is going to be a unique experience that will showcase NCAA Division I level collegiate tennis at its very best.

Jackson is looking forward to bringing world class college tennis to the California Tennis Club this fall for the Battle of the Bay Tennis Classic. The California Tennis Club has a rich history of hosting world-class tennis dating back to the Pacifi c Open in the 1950’s-60’s. This unique tennis tournament will be open to the public and the California Tennis Club looks forward to creating a community based top-notch tennis tournament that will serve all who attend.

The 4 day schedule of events include first day qualifying, a Sponsor/Player Pro-Am, cocktail reception, exhibition match between ATP Professionlas Jared Palmer and Paul Goldstein and the best college tennis players in the bay area competing.  Admission is free and spectators are welcome at the Cal Club in San Francisco.  A variety of Sponsorship opportunities are available.  Visit www.BattleoftheBayClassic.com for more information and a complete schedule of each days events.
