After exceeding expectations and selling out the first annual USTA Week at the Lair of the Bear in 2008, USTA Northern California and UC Berkeley’s historic alumni camp have partnered once again, and are excited to announce the debut of a second Lair session featuring world-class tennis instruction.
Piggybacking on the success of last year’s Sports & Recreation Week, USPTA and Meadowood Resort Pros Bob Klyce and Doug King will lead an extraordinary, high-energy vacation experience for players of all abilities. Affectionately called Club Lair, it will take place this August 30- September 6, 2009.
The very popular Sports & Recreation Week returns as well with legendary Cal Women’s Tennis Coach Jan Brogan and Wimbledon veteran Helle Viragh. They will again join Bob Klyce to lead the charge this September 6-13, 2009.
Located just three hours east of the Bay Area at 5600 feet in beautiful Pinecrest, CA, the Lair annually provides memorable vacations for an astonishing 10,000 Cal alumni and friends. But what makes summer camp for adults so special?
“The Lair is passionate about the camper experience,” says Mike Yaley, the Lair of the Bear’s Director. “From the first minute of your arrival to the final campfire, you will be treated to a very special vibe - one that is beyond description, beyond fun!”
“We are delighted to be sharing our home away from home with USTA members,” says Yaley. “We had such a phenomenal turnout last year at Sports & Rec Week and we know a great number of campers will be returning. This year we are not only delighted to be opening the door to so many members (by adding a new week), but we are thrilled with the high-powered instructors we have lined up.”
Alissa Cohan, Marketing Specialist at USTA Northern California, adds that the timing is perfect for a Lair and USTA partnership. “The USTA is reinventing its commitment to creating fun social outlets for our players. And the Lair is the perfect opportunity for players to learn from top instructors, and to have a wonderful time in the mountains.”
The cost for a week at Club Lair, or for Sports & Rec Week, is $695 for USTA members/$795 for non-members. The tennis program at each session offers play on eight courts and features skills and strategy sessions, instruction in doubles team dynamics and point and changeover routines, tournaments, exhibition play, evening fireside chats, and a daily dose of big screen US Open coverage. In addition, campers will revel in outstanding athletic facilities, Lair-eoke, tie-dye, Lair Golf (real clubs and tennis balls!), professionally-led high country hiking, swimming, massage,* and kayaking with the ospreys on beautiful
Pinecrest Lake. Campers also will enjoy a great menu, nightly social events, and campfire entertainment. It is truly a wildly diversified week of activity - one in which tennis players will find all that they are looking for in a simultaneously action-packed, and thoroughly relaxing, vacation experience.
For more information about these sessions and to register, visit the Lair of the Bear website or call the Lair Office at 510-642-0221. Sign-up early - we expect these sessions to sell out.
You don’t have to wait until September to improve your tennis! Jan Brogan will return to provide tips on how to improve your doubles play. “Jan’s Tips” will be featured monthly on our website, www.norcal.usta.com leading up to her appearance at camp.
* Massage is offered at additional cost.
