WHAT ARE THE USTA NATIONAL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
Every year, the USTA sanctions two different types of USTA Team Championships to give junior players the fun experience of representing their USTA Section and playing on a team. At these team events, USTA NorCal sends its strongest players.
These team events provide an opportunity for NorCal’s top juniors to be seen by college coaches and to compete against top juniors from other USTA Sections. It’s a great opportunity to play on a fun team and to develop and improve physical, mental, and emotional skills. They also allow players to experience a competitive team atmosphere and on-court coaching, just like college tennis!

INTERESTED IN BEING A TEAM MANAGER?
Each year, USTA NorCal designates team managers to travel with the team to assist the coaches with logistics and to chaperone players. USTA NorCal will cover airfare, hotel, transportation, and food ($40/day) for each team manager. We are looking for two (2) team managers to travel with the 16s Zonals teams. Some responsibilities of being a team manager include:
• Be sure all players are on time for events, matches, etc.
• Conduct room checks each night
• Make sure players have enough water and food during the event
• Assist in any way to make a productive, safe, and successful team trip (i.e. help with transportation to and from the event)
If you are interested in being a team manager for this event, please email Tommy Tu at ttu@norcal.usta.com. All requests will be reviewed by the junior department at USTA NorCal.
THERE IS A TEAM WORKOUT BEFORE THE EVENT
All players selected are expected to attend a MANDATORY team practice with the team coaches on Sunday, July 22 (Time is TBD) at the Harbor Bay Club. The Harbor Bay Club is located on 200 Packet Landing Road, Alameda, CA 94502. The approximately 3-hour team workout event will include no less than 2 hours of tennis and a meeting/party with food following tennis. There is no charge to the team workout.
This team workout will be held by the team coaches and USTA NorCal staff for the participants in the USTA Boys’ and Girls’ 16, 14, and 12 Zone Team Championships and the USTA Boys’ and Girls’ 18 National Team Championships. Attendance by the team coaches is mandatory. Attendance by the team managers is mandatory. Attendance by the players is mandatory, unless clearance is given by USTA NorCal.
The purposes of this workout include:
-build team spirit and camaraderie
-introduce the coaches to the players and parents
-allow for time to review policies and rules, prior to arriving at the tournament, with the opportunity to ask questions
-finalize the arrival logistics of the coaches, team managers, and players
-secure parents to volunteer (w/ managers) to organize meals, to better allow the coaches to concentrate on coaching
-allow for the distribution of team uniforms

IS THERE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE?
Please do not let the cost keep you from competing in this event. If financial assistance is needed, you can apply for grants through the Northern California Tennis Foundation (NCTF). The NCTF funds junior tennis players who do not have the financial means to receive individual instruction, travel to and participate in USTA NorCal sanctioned tournaments or USTA National Championship tournaments. Travel assistance funds may only be used for players’ expenses, travel and accommodations.
