The 2012 Junior Team Tennis Section Championships took place from August 3rd to 5th at Fresno. USTA Northern California partnered with 4 local Fresno area clubs and 2 high schools to help host the event. More than 400 players participated in the eight divisions over the weekend.
The top teams from all over Northern California qualified for the Section Championships. Over 3 days, the teams battled it out to earn the title and bragging rights. Same gender division winners earned an invitation to play in the annual Gar Glenney Cup to compete against the Section Champions from Southern California, to be held this year at Long Beach, CA. The coed division winners qualify to represent NorCal in the Junior Team Tennis National Championships.
The highlight of the first day of the event was the Players’ party sponsored by California Pizza kitchen. In addition to great food, the kids had fun socializing with players from other teams and winning raffle prizes. Amy Jensen, Manager of Player Development was at the site to talk to players, parents and coaches on "Pathway to Player Development".
The tennis was extremely competitive with several matches decided by the last singles match and some of those last matches were decided by a match tiebreaker. Courtside Club teams commented that they enjoyed playing the team format and that there was nothing like playing in an atmosphere where their friends cheered loud and hard for them.
Darren Wenger, USTA NorCal Jr. Team Tennis Co-ordinator and Tournament Director was thrilled with the progress this tournament has made over the last couple of years and thanked the clubs and high schools at Fresno, the officials and volunteers for the smooth functioning and success of the event.
The event showed once again that Junior Team Tennis is not just about the sport, it is a celebration of team spirit, sportsmanship and developing friendship.
