All Cal Berkeley final at the2011 Northern California Campus Championships. Berkeley Gold defeated their fellow Cal team, Berkeley White in the finals.
It was an all Berkeley final with the Berkeley Gold team defeating the Berkeley White team for section championship honors October 29-30 at Stanford University. UC Berkeley earns a bid to the USTA National Campus Championships April 12-14, 2012, Cary Tennis Park, Cary, North Carolina.
Other teams that will be representing the section at the National Campus Championships are UC Davis and Stanford, who finished third and fourth respectively.
The Tennis on Campus program is coed and events are played using a World Team Tennis format; a mens's singles and doubles match, a women's singles and doubles match and one mixed match. Shortened sets and no-ad scoring makes for a very fast paced tournament. Teams accrue points for each game won and are allowed on-court coaching and substitutions. All of this creates an incredibly fun, socially competitive, team event.
The USTA National Campus Championship is the pinnacle of the Tennis On Campus program. Hosted in partnership by the USTA, National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA), World Team Tennis (WTT), and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), this venue features 64 college and university co-ed teams competing for bragging rights and the illustrious title of National Champion. Tennis on Campus powerhouse UC Berkeley won the National Campus Championships in 2010, reaching the semifinals in 2011.
Big shout out to the team from Chico State who won the Costume Contest hands down, dressed as Ninja Turtles. Chico teammate Ben Engle won Best Individual Costume as Captain Quail Man. His photo is among the Gallery shots.
