Joan Vormbaum took a passion for soccer officiating and switched it to tennis when a fellow club member in San Jose asked for some help on the lines of a pro tournament. Vormbaum, the mother of two, had to find a baby-sitter to work the event, which was an eye-opener on what was right and wrong in the world of officiating. After more than 25 years of officiating and pushing for higher standards and smart efficiencies, Vormbaum is the ATP's special Chief of umpires for all of the U.S. She chooses the umpires and negotiates tournament contracts. As for Grand Slams, she has officiated in the chair on on the lines at 20 US Opens, eight Wimbledons, five Australian Opens and three French.
