William G. Simons started Inside Tennis magazine more than 20 years ago. bringing to Northern California its first free tennis publication of regional, national and international news and features. The Oakland-based newsprint publication publishes 250,000 copies nine times a year and has a Southern California edition as well. But it is also read widely. The San Francisco Chronicle's Bruce Jenkins has called Inside Tennis "the best free (sports) publication in the nation." Simons led a successful movement two years ago to get the USTA stadium in Flushing Meadow named after Arthur Ashe.He won the USTA Print Media Award in 2002.
