2010 Summer Camp Scholarships

2010 Summer Camp Scholarships

Looking for young tennis enthusiasts ready to take their game to the next level.  An intensive week of training could be just what it takes!  Applications are now available and must be returned by April 5th, 2010 to be considered.  Over 50 scholarships will be awarded to summer tennis camps for youngsters who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend camp.

Eagle Fustar Tennis Development coaches: Nick Fustar, Brian Eagle, Ogidi Obi

USTA Player Development announced today that the Eagle Fustar Tennis Program, which operates in Northern California on the campuses of Santa Clara University, West Valley College and Mission College, has been named a USTA Certified Regional Training Center as part of its continuing expanded efforts to develop future American tennis champions.  As a Certified Regional Training Center, Eagle Fustar Tennis will help to better serve the junior tennis community in the USTA Northern California Section, and USTA Player Development will use this new partnership as a vehicle to invite all of Northern California’s junior tennis coaches to work together towards developing the next generation of American champions.

Parents, bring your kids to see the fun and excitement of varsity tennis competition first hand.  Campus Kids Days are are great opportunities to expose more junior players (and their parents and coaches) to college tennis varsity team matches.  Check out the team, check out the campus and take in the added activities that the coaches have planned for Campus Kids' Day.  Come see Stanford, Fresno State and Cal Berkeley mens matches.

CHAMISAL TO HOST US OPEN NATIONAL PLAYOFFS

US Open National Playoffs

The USTA Northern California Section announced today that Chamisal Tennis & Fitness Club will host the US Open National Playoffs Northern California Qualifying Tournament, May 17-23.  The US Open National Playoffs begins with 16 sectional qualifying tournaments held throughout the country from April through June.  The men’s and women’s champions from each of the sectional qualifying tournaments advance to the US Open National Playoffs – Men’s and Women’s Championships, which will be held in conjunction with Olympus US Open Series tournaments this summer.

2010 Regional Training Centers for 8-12 Year Olds

2010 Coaches Summit
The Regional Training Center Initiative, a partnership between USTA Player Developement and USTA Northern California.

Fifty of the top Northern California junior development coaches  were invited to attend the 2010 Coaches Summit, conducted by USTA Player Development and USTA Northern California at the Claremont Resort, January 16th. 

The purpose of the summit was to introduce the Regional Training Center Initiative (RTC’s) and the USTA Coaching Philosophy and to strengthen the partnerships with Northern California coaches of our top ranked 8 – 12 year olds (born in 1998 - 2001).

Shaun Chaudhuri to receive 2009 Bill Talbert Junior Sportsmanhip Award

Shaun Chaudhuri

Shaun Chaudhuri of Danville, CA will be presented the prestigious award in July by the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.  Shaun will receive his award during the enshrinement ceremony into the International Tennis Hall of Fame for some of the world's greatest tennis legends.

Ellen Tsay added to her collection of Gold Balls with a win in the Girls 18s at the Winter National Championship.

Ccongratulations to all of the junior players who represented the Northern California section at the recent USTA Winter National Championships.  Boys anf girls competed in the 12s and 14s in Tuscon, AZ and the 16s and 18s competed in Scottsdale, AZ.  Among the notable results are two players who won their singles event, earning a prestigious gold ball and two players who earned silver balls in doubles.

USTA Serves - Foundation for Academics. Character. Excellence. is a not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to support, monitor and promote programs that enhance the lives of underserved children through the integration of tennis and education. It encourages children to pursue their goals and highest dreams by succeeding in school and becoming responsible citizens, targeting youngsters from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • The Player Incentive Award is a one time, nonrenewable grant of $500. Its purpose is to encourage the development of USTA youth tennis program participants with great potential and a commitment to academic excellence.
  • USTA Serves awards six different scholarships to deserving youngsters who have participated in United States Tennis Association (USTA) and other organized youth tennis programs.

Mackenzie McDonald (Piedmont, Calif.) fought back from a first-set loss to defeat Britain’s Kyle Edmund 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in a battle that went just beyond the three-hour mark.  “I had to give it everything I had,” said McDonald, who advanced to face Vietnam’s Thien Nguyen in Wednesday’s final.

2009 Herb Cup Doubles Championship

The 2009 Herb Cup Doubles Inviational after a week's reschedule due to rain, changes in participants  and delays due to wet courts, finally got underway at the Harbor Bay Club in Alameda on December 19. The Cup is named in honor of Peter Herb, who was the Executive Director of USTA Northern California for 40 years. Top NorCal doubles players competed for the Cup while having a great time!

USTA Announces Pancho Gonzales Scholar Athlete Grant

USTA Northern California is proud to announce the new Pancho Gonzalez Scholar-Athletic Grant offered by USTA National Diversity Department.  In honor of Pancho Gonzalez, the Mexican-American icon who won two U.S. Championships men’s singles titles and whose dedication to the sport of tennis brought together fans from all walks of life.  We look to reward players who work to excel and lead others on and off the court.

The grant is being offered nation wide and two worthy candidates will be chosen.  Each recipient will receive a one time $2500 grant to help offset costs with training expenses. The recipient(s) must be training and competing in tournaments year-round.

In it's fourth year, the Pacific Cup Exchange brings together the top players from the four western United States USTA sections, Southern California, Intermountain, Pacific Northwest and Northern California.  Hosted by the Pacific Northwest Section, NorCal players flew to Beaverton, Oregon for two and a half days of round robin play.

In Memorium: Elena Cadet

Elena Cadet: Feb. 8, 1991 - Nov. 21, 2009

USTA NorCal lost one of its talented junior players Saturday morning when Elena Cadet was fatally injured in a car accident. A memorial service for Elena was held Friday, November 27 at the Diablo Country Club in Diablo, CA.  She had just begun her college tennis career as a member of the University of California at Riverside Highlanders.
