More than 500 tennis players on 46 teams took part in the USTA Northern California Combo Doubles Section Championship, February 1, 2008 at the Gold River Racquet Club near Sacramento, California.
Teams won round-robin flights contested during the day on Friday. The USTA League Combo Doubles Section Championships were originally planned for three days, February 1-3, 2008, but due to the threat of rain, were shortened to one, using with a modified format of shorter pro-sets and no-ad scoring.
This year’s event featured the best women’s and men’s Combo Doubles league tennis teams from throughout Northern California and Northern Nevada. The teams, which represent various clubs, parks and recreational departments and community tennis associations, won District Championship events held late last year. (A small number of teams advanced directly to the Section Championship.)
Congratulations to the eight winning teams!

Combo Doubles is currently the fastest growing adult league program in the USTA Northern California Section, with 8,923 participants in 2007, a 22% increase over the previous year. The unique format allows players of different abilities to play together as a doubles team. Each team match features three doubles matches.
2005 marked the 25th anniversary of the USTA League. Established in 1980, it has grown from 13,000 participants in a few parts of the country in its first year, to over 625,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis program. USTA Northern California has over 50, 000 participants in our League program in 2007.
The USTA League was established to provide adult recreational tennis players throughout the country with the opportunity to compete against players of similar ability levels. Players participate on teams in a league format, which is administered by the USTA through its 17 Sections. The league groups players by using six National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) levels, ranging from 2.5 (beginner) to 5.0 (advanced). USTA League is open to any USTA member 19 years of age or older. It features Adult and Mixed Doubles leagues, a Senior league (age 50 and over) and two Super Senior leagues (age 60 and older and age 65 and older), Fifty Mixed Doubles and Combo Doubles.
