USTA NorCal News

USTA NorCal junior tournament players compete hard all winter and spring to earn the high ranking necessary to be selected for one of the summer team national events.  The boys and girls 12s, 14s & 16s Zone Team Championships, 16s Intersectionals and the 18s National Team Championships are a wonderful experience for kids who are more often competing as individuals.  The wild cheering and format of these events is similar to a collegiate match, including on-court coaching.  USTA NorCal had some great results and judging from the photos and videos, they definitely had a great time!

 

Both of our teams from the Boys’ and girls’ 14 Zone Team Championships in Colorado came in first and second; we beat 4 SoCal teams.  This could be the first time in USTA NorCal history that our BG14 Zonals took first and second place.

 

Our Boys’ 18 National Team Championship also had a great result. We took 5th out of all 17 USTA sections, one of the best USTA NorCal finishes in many years! The best wins of the tournament came when we defeated the defending champions, Florida, and SoCal. In both matches, we were down 0-3 but the guys fought hard and came back to win the last four matches! We saved a total of 6 match points in both matches. Against SoCal and Florida, it came down to the final match in the third set tiebreaker! We won 8-6 in the third set tiebreaker against SoCal and 7-5 in the third set tiebreaker against Florida! Unbelievable!
